Pitman and his coauthors suggest that whales grazing in Antarctica's icy waters retain body heat by directing blood flow away from their skin. That would slow down natural skin sloughing and impair skin cell regrowth. Whales could reactivate their skin metabolism and molt in a setting that does not deplete their body heat by migrating to warmer waters. This, according to the writers, is what motivates their migrations. The two study's primary authors first postulated in 2011 that skin molt might be the primary factor in some Antarctic killer whales' migration. Download it today and here's the link.
