VOLVEREMOS A ANTÁRTICA / WE WILL RETURN TO ANTARCTICA

Estamos de vuelta en Santiago de Chile, preparando nuestro regreso a los Andes Antárticos.
 
La suspensión de la expedición durante el primer intento ha reducido en un mes nuestro tiempo disponible para realizarla. Ahora contamos con tres meses, y no con cuatro como en un principio. Esta situación nos ha obligado a reestructurar el plan e itinerario original, de la forma que se describe a continuación.
 
El martes 7 de diciembre volaremos con Sebastián Roca a la ciudad de Ushuaia, la más austral del mundo, situada en el sur de la gran isla de Tierra del Fuego, “el fin del mundo y el comienzo de todo”, como dicen los ushuaienses.
 
Al día siguiente nos embarcaremos en el poderoso buque expedicionario ANTARCTIC DREAM.
 
Dejando atrás el legendario Cabo de Hornos, entraremos en las aguas tormentosas del mar de Drake, por las que navegaremos cerca de 1000 kilómetros hasta encontrar refugio en el Estrecho de Bransfield o Mar de la Flota, más allá de las islas Shetland del Sur.
 
El 11 de diciembre desembarcaremos con todos nuestros equipos en Punta Portal, donde estableceremos nuestro campamento base.
 
Desde ahí comenzaremos el ascenso de los Andes Antárticos, penetrando la península Reclus hasta remontar el Plateau Forbidden.

Serán varios viajes de ida y regreso, en los que subiremos nuestros kayaks y equipos por sobre los 1000 metros de altura, transportando cerca de 190 kilos.

Este porteo podría tomarnos entre 8 y 12 días, y durante él será necesario flanquear y remontar fuertes pendientes, transitar por terrenos mixtos, de roca, hielo y nieve, y pasar entre seracs y por peligrosos campos de grietas, ocultas por las nevadas invernales y los vientos del oeste.
 
Una vez que nos encontremos en la cumbre del plateau Forbidden, cargaremos los kayaks con los equipos y los tiraremos como trineos, arrastrándolos por la nieve y el hielo con la ayuda de esquís de travesía, pieles y bastones.
 
Desde el Plateau Forbidden pasaremos al plateau Foster, y luego al Plateau Herbert, superando la depresión que los separa, un portezuelo muy agrietado señalado en la cartografía británica como "The Waist" (la cintura).
 
Del Plateau Herbert pasaremos al gran Plateau Detroit, pasando por otro portezuelo, "The Catwalk" (la pasarela).
 
Finalmente, dejando atrás el Plateau Detroit, llegaremos al límite norte de esa sucesión de mesetas, donde bajaremos al mar por el Glaciar Victory, alcanzando la Punta Pitt en la orilla del Canal Príncipe Gustavo.
 
De esta forma cruzaremos la Península Antártica de Oeste a Este, recorriendo cerca de 400 kilómetros a pie para unir los océanos Pacífico y Atlántico.
Esta travesía terrestre podría tomarnos entre 30 y 40 días.
 
Durante buena parte del tiempo tendremos que avanzar enfrentando nevadas y fuertes vientos del cuadrante noroeste- suroeste, y baja visibilidad, a causa de las nubes que suelen cubrir las cumbres del plateau antartandino. El GPS nos guiará por el camino seguro, manteniéndonos lejos de los bordes acantilados y sus grietas gigantescas.
 
Una vez que lleguemos a la costa atlántica, nuestras pulkas o "pulkayaks" retornarán a la función para las que fueron concebidas: la navegación marítima.

Utilizando los equipos de mar que conducimos por el hielo, intentaremos salir por el canal Príncipe Gustavo al golfo Erebus y Terror, un área que suele estar saturada de témpanos a la deriva y colosales Icebergs tabulares desprendidos de las plataformas de hielo flotantes de Larsen.
 
Si fuera imposible navegar a causa de los témpanos, continuaremos tirando los kayaks hacia el norte, primero por el Cugnot Ice Piedemont, y luego por el istmo de la Península Tabarin, que une las bahías Duse y Esperanza.
 
Saliendo del área del Golfo Erebus y Terror, sea por mar o por hielo, llegaremos al canal Antártico, el cual cruzaremos para retornar al océano Pacífico.
 
Navegando por la costa occidental de la Península Trinidad hacia el sur, volveremos a Punta Portal, nuestro punto de partida. Será una navegación de 500 kilómetros, que esperamos completar en 20 días.
 
Llegando a Punta Portal, habremos completado un itinerario de 900 kilómetros aproximadamente.
 
Durante esta expedición contaremos con el apoyo de David Donoso, quien traducirá nuestros reportes al inglés. La elaboración de los informes meteorológicos estará a cargo de Fabiola Torres, quien además será el enlace entre la expedición y terceros. La asistencia médica será otorgada por el Dr. Sebastián Irarrázaval, con quien tendremos un canal de comunicación permanente.
 
La Expedición Andes Antárticos será la primera travesía a nivel mundial en utilizar kayaks para acceder a espacios marítimos y terrestres en el continente antártico, usándolos como embarcación y trineo.
 
A lo largo del itinerario realizaremos un detallado registro fotográfico y audiovisual de los escenarios y vida silvestre, desde la perspectiva profunda y de bajo impacto de una expedición en kayak.

Este material, complementando el conseguido por la Expedición Kayak Antártica 2008-2009, se destinará a la creación de productos de divulgación -film documental, libro, artículos y sitio web- que informarán sobre las consecuencias del Calentamiento Global en los escenarios y vida silvestre de la Península Antártica.
 
La Península Antártica se está calentando cinco veces más rápido que el promedio mundial. A consecuencia de ello, muchas especies adaptadas para vivir en ese ambiente frío, ahora están perdiendo su único hogar.
 
Para preparar esta expedición hemos recorrido un largo camino, recibiendo la valiosa ayuda de muchas personas y empresas, a quienes deseamos testimoniar nuestro agradecimiento.

We are now back in Santiago de Chile, preparing our return to the shy Antarctic Andes.
 
The suspension of the expedition during the first attempt has reduced in a month our available time to realize it. Now we count with three months, and not with four as in the beginning. This situation has forced us to restructure the plan and original itinerary, of the way that is described as follow:
 
On Tuesday, 7th of December we will fly with Sebastián Roca to the beautiful city of Ushuaia, the most austral of the world, placed in the south of the great island of Tierra del Fuego, " the end of the world and the beginning of everything", as well say the ushuaienses. The following day we will embark in the powerful expeditionary ship ANTARCTIC DREAM.
 
Leaving behind the legendary Cape Horn, we will enter the stormy waters of Drake's sea, along which we will sail near 1000 kilometres up to finding refuge in the Strait of Bransfield or Mar de la Flota, beyond the islands Shetland of the South.
 
On december 11 we will land with all our equipments in Portal Point, where we will establish our camp base.
 
From there we will begin the ascent of the Antarctic Andes, penetrating the peninsula Reclus up to climb the Plateau Forbidden
 
They will be several trips of going and return, in which we will raise our kayaks and equipments for on 1000 meters of height, transporting near 190 kilos.
This carry might take us between 8 and 12 days, and during it will be necessary to flank and to climb hanging forts, to pass along mixed areas, of rock, ice and snow, and to pass between seracs and for dangerous fields of cracks, hidden for the winter snowfalls and the winds of the west.
 
As soon as we are in the summit of the plateau Forbidden, we will load the kayaks with the equipments and will pull them as bobsleds, dragging them for the snow and the ice with the help of skis of voyage, leather and canes.
 
From the Plateau Forbidden we will pass to the plateau Foster, and then to the Plateau Herbert, overcoming the depression that separates them, a very cracked portezuelo indicated in the British cartography as "The Waist".
 
From the Plateau Herbert we will pass to the great Plateau Detroit, passing for another portezuelo, "The Catwalk".
 
Finally, leaving behind the Plateau Detroit, we will come to the north limit of this succession of plateaus, where we will go down to the sea for the Glacier Victory, reaching the Pitt Point in the shore of the Channel Prince Gustavo.
 
By this way we will cross the Antarctic Peninsula from West to East, crossing near 400 kilometres by foot to join the Pacific Ocean and The Atlantic Ocean.
 
This terrestrial voyage might take us between 30 and 40 days. During good part of the time we will have to advance facing covered with snow and strong winds of the quadrant northwest - southwest, and low visibility, because of the clouds that are in the habit of covering the summits of the plateau antartandino. The GPS will guide us for the safe way, keeping us far from the steep edges and his gigantic cracks.
 
As soon as we come to the Atlantic coast, our pulkas or "pulkayaks" will come back to the function for those who were conceived: the maritime navigation.
Using the equipments of sea that we lead for the ice, we will try to go out for the channel Prince Gustavo to the gulf Erebus and Terror, an area that is in the habit of being saturated of floes aimlessly and colossal Icebergs detached from the platforms of Larsen's drift ice.
 
If it was impossible to sail because of the floes, we will continue pulling the kayaks towards the north, firstly for the Cugnot Ice Piedemont, and then for the isthmus of the Peninsula Tabarin, which joins the bays Duse and Hope.
 
Going out of the area of the Gulf Erebus and Terror, be by sea or ice, we will come to the channel Antarctic, which we will cross to come back to the ocean Pacific Ocean.
 
Navigating upon the western coast of the Peninsula Trinidad towards the south, we will return to Portal Point, our point of start.
 
It will be a navigation of 500 kilometres, which we expect to complete in 20 days.
 
Coming to Portal Point, we will have completed an itinerary of 900 kilometres approximately.
 
During this expedition we will rely on David Donoso's support, who will translate our reports into English. The elaboration of the meteorological reports will be at the expense of Fabiola Torres, who in addition will be the link between the expedition and third. The medical assistance will be granted by the Dr. Sebastián Irarrázaval, with whom we will have a channel of permanent communication.
 
The Expedition Andes Antárticos will be the first voyage worldwide in using kayaks to accede to maritime and terrestrial spaces in the Antarctic continent, using them as craft and bobsled.
 
Along the itinerary we will develop a detailed photographic and audio-visual record of the landscape and wild life, from the deep perspective and of low impact of an expedition in kayak.
 
This material, complementing the obtained one for the Expedition Kayak Antártica 2008-2009, will be destined to the creation of products of spreading - documentary film, book, papers and a web site that will inform about the consequences of the Global Warming in the scenes and wild life of the Antarctic Peninsula.
 
The Antarctic Peninsula is warming up five times more rapid than the world average. As a result of it, many species adapted to live in this cold environment, now are losing their unique home.
